First Direct drops mortgages for non-customers

First Direct has stopped offering mortgages to people who are not already its customers. It says applications have been five times usual levels.

This is a stunning number when you bear in mind that the number of home sales in December was down 40% compared with 2006.

It's not just Northern Rock that is scaling back.
