A new Claims Code for insurance companies is to lay down time limits
which insurers must meet in dealing with consumer claims.
The code ran from 1 January 2001. Insurers have to give a copy
of it to individuals when they buy a policy or make a claim.
It will cover general insurance claims, such as motor, household,
travel, payment protection, and private medical insurance.
It will extend to loss adjusters, or anyone else acting for the
insurer.
The Code can be used by the Insurance Ombudsman or the courts as
a measure of minimum standards that should have been followed.
